Summer Program – Register and Tell a Friend!

Seven Hills’ summer program offers adventurous, energetic, creative week-long courses and activities for all age groups. Several courses for students ages 7 through 12 are still available for registration, including “Creating Monsters and Creatures,” “Our Great Parks,” “Retro & Classic Games,” “Fun with the Ukulele,” and “Retro & Classic Games,” to name a few. Several of the Middle and Upper summer program courses are also new this summer, including “Art Collective,” “Preparing for Geometry,” “TorchPrep ACT Preparation,” and “Learn How to Learn,” a course that focuses on reading ,writing, and listening. Summer school co-directors Linda Clark and Jill Romerill said families enjoy the summer program because they are able to create their schedules on a weekly basis and choose from more than 100 course offerings.

A Farewell to Six Giants

They were loyal and kind, hilarious and humble. They were icons and pioneers, sages and historians. He solved class scheduling issues without skipping a beat, she taught multiple generations of students on the Doherty Campus, he solved problems with a calm presence, she helped Lotspeich students fall in love with books, he empowered hundreds of Stinger athletes, and he took Seven Hills students on almost every field trip they can remember. These six retiring employees—Lowell Wenger, Sarah Roberts, Tom Betts, Marcia Snyder, Dick Snyder, and Glenn Shillinger—were longtime Seven Hills employees whose cumulative years add up to 243 at Seven Hills, are giants in their own right. They shared laughs, happy tears, and so many memories with friends and colleagues during Seven Hills’ closing luncheon in Founders Hall in early June. With beloved colleagues sharing reminiscent tales and original poetry nearby, each retiree sat in their gift, a beautifully adorned wooden chair bearing a plaque with a message. Of Wenger, a 37-year teacher at Seven Hills, history department chair Brian Wabler said Wenger has a “steel-trap mind. He is a Seven Hills archivist and his brain is the archives.” Head of Doherty Patti Guethlein bade farewell to 40-year teacher Roberts C’67, calling her a “student, teacher, parent, and legend.” Head of Middle School Bill Waskowitz wrote an original poem about Betts, which was based on Wallace Steven’s 13 Ways of Looking at a Blackbird, said Betts had a way of responding to the needs of adolescent students in calm and measured ways. Lotspeich art teacher Jody Knoop and fifth-grade teacher Karla Balskus presented Marcia Snyder with The Big Book of Marcia and invited her to enjoy her “next chapter” after 42 years at Seven Hills. Athletic Director Brian Phelps and Middle School Athletic Director Roger Schnirring had Dick Snyder in stitches with a top-10-style rundown of the past 43 years, and, to honor his 45 years, Guethlein and Doherty teacher Tracy Hickenlooper regaled Shillinger with a hilarious trip down memory lane, from moments when Guethlein was a teacher’s aide running off dittos, to Shillinger’s no-nonsense take on safety, to just how much he will be missed by the entire Seven Hills community. To our retiring giants, we will miss you! Thank you for your decades of commitment, service, and dedication to Seven Hills.
